Modernizing the Dry Unloading System

The M/V Swalinge is a trailing suction hopper dredger of Den Herder Seaworks. This vessel was modernized in 2022 to improve its operational capacity and expand its dredging capability. For instance, it was extended to 37.1 meters, increasing its loading capacity from 1800 to about 3000 cubic meters. This extension required modifications to the dry unloading system, wherein Machinefactory Stokman played a vital role. Our custom solutions significantly improved the ship’s dry unloading system during this renovation.

Challenges and Requirements

Before modernization, the M/V Swalinge’s dry unloading system consisted of a loading crane, conveyor belts, and a shore conveyor. This system was not adequately equipped to handle the increased loading capacity following the ship’s expansion. The existing system was also prone to malfunctions and delays, hindering the efficient disposal of dredging materials.

Machine Factory Stokman’s Solution

To address these challenges, Machine Factory Stokman assisted in designing an advanced bulk handling system tailored to the specific needs of the M/V Swalinge. The project included developing and installing a 24-meter-long and 40-ton centerline conveyor, along with new cross conveyors, side conveyors, pulleys, and rollers for the shore conveyor.

Increased Efficiency and Reliability

The installation of Stokman’s robust components resulted in a significant improvement in the unloading efficiency and reliability of the M/V Swalinge. The new system can now unload the entire dredging load in about 2.5 hours, a considerable reduction from the previous unloading time.

Machine Factory Stokman: Expert in Bulk Handling Systems

This project demonstrates the effectiveness of the conveyor belt solutions provided by Machine Factory Stokman. Our systems are known for their high level of reliability and longevity. They minimize the risk of unplanned downtime and ensure an efficient and consistent flow of materials. This is of great importance in busy ports where every minute counts and tight schedules must be followed.
